Pre-flop in No Limit Texas Holdem

Even in No Limit Texas Holdem, the phase before the flop which is known as the pre-flop, is very important. Of course it is the phase where in it can be determined whether or not it is a success. However, it is also the phase where in some things must be done like only making the right moves, playing right to secure win and behaving at the table.

Specifically, at pre-flop you need to:

  • Check the hand you currently have, if it is a premium hand then you can go and see the flop. Otherwise, if it is not a premium hand, consider not seeing the flop. Without a premium hand, it would be too risky to see the flop.
  • Be unreadable. Your opponents must not be able to know what are you up to, what hand or hands you are presently playing or what strategy are you applying in order to win. In a way, to be unreadable is also to be unpredictable.
  • Know if your opponents are weak or strong. They can simply be beaten if they are weak, thus, you can see the flop. But they can’t simply be beaten if they are strong, therefore, you can just not consider seeing the flop. It will be risky for you if ever you consider doing so.
  • Maintain almost all raises between 70 percent and 100 percent of the pot. It will enable you to have more money specially if there is a player with a strong hand who makes a call or else re-raises. In case there are some limpers, keep raises at five times the big blind if you can.
  • Play wisely most especially when against strong or tight opponents. Say for example, such players decide to raise, just fold if you have something like AQ. However, they must be in the under the gun position when they decide to raise.
  • Try to make your opponents pay to see the flop. However, they must be with low pairs and connectors so you can raise and re-raise top pairs down to QQ and top connectors down to AQ.
